Identity Crisis is an awesome brand that features some extremely original designer pantyhose and thigh high socks among other legwear products and one we’ve been wanting to feature on our website for a long time ever since we were approached by Elysia Panda, the brand’s founder. Elysia was kind enough to send us some items and we loved everything about them starting with the way they were packaged within a large strip of fluorescent malleable plastic with the logo stamped on them in black labeling tape which gives it an electro-punkish feel that’s visible throughout the Identity Crisis product line.
We sent Elysia a couple of questions about the brand and she was awesome to take some time to answer them, lets jump right ahead and get to know more about Elysia and her awesome legwear brand, Identity Crisis:
Why did you have this idea of starting a new designer’s brand dedicated solely to legwear?
I have been infatuated with legwear for a LONG time!! One day I was visiting my grandmother and she noticed a pair of thigh highs that I was wearing. She went back into her bedroom and brought out this box. In the box was a gorgeous pair of silk stockings that my grandfather brought back to her from Italy after the war. It was this shared sentiment that really brought forth my love for legwear.
Beyond this personal sentiment, I find it incredible that legwear is such a timeless accessory; always taking on a new form of trend in every decade, every season. It never dies and unlike many trends that come and go, legwear is always prevalent in some shape or another. Ex. ankle socks, tube socks and pattern-heavy socks for men are the “in” trends at the moment. Tomorrow the trend could be something completely different!
Your brand was originally called Stocking Noir, what made you change the name to Identity Crisis?
Identity Crisis is StockingNoir 2.0 ! Since last May when the legwear business began, we sold a mix of curated pieces from other designers and created pieces that we designed for collections of own. With the growing technological trend in “custom print” and creative freedom to design (…whatever the hell we wanted!), I found the creation process more fulfilling and quite frankly, a wave of the future. So, Stocking Noir was rebranded as Identity Crisis to redefine the direction of the company to speciality / custom print socks, thigh highs + pantyhose.
Can you tell us about some of the collaborations you have with artists?
Our next collaboration will be out next month featuring designer, Xtina Lee (xtinadraws.com). Xtina is an illustrator and graphic designer, who recently graduated from Carnegie Mellon, interned with VICE mag and studied with the University of Arts in London. I originally saw her prints at a CMU Senior Showcase and thought “oh good lord, those discombobulated limbs would make the raddest socks.” So, I sent her an email (pretty much the second I got home) and we’ve been planning this collection ever since!
I am personally really excited for this collaboration as it is a 4-piece collection of socks, thigh highs and pantyhose in super weird-yet-playful prints. It is everything that the young at <3 can get down with! Xtina describes her design style influenced by “kitsch, comics and a bad sense of humor.” I think that people will definitely be able to see and enjoy that…

What’s your main inspiration when you think about new collections, can you guide us through your thought process?
Each collection basically depends on who is designing. It ties back into the name Identity Crisis that way…as each collection is a reflection of the designers personal style & identity. I do play a creative role in each collection but that has more to do with deciding how to best showcase the designer and shooting all the content for web. My philosophy is to offer creative input but pretty much let each designer do their own thing~
Please, tell us a little more about yourself, Elysia, who is the person behind this fantastic brand?
Haha, Elysia is just as much in a state of Identity Crisis as the name might suggest. I’m a wearer of many hats. I’m an entrepreneur / event planner / fashionista / model / visual artist / stylist / web junkie. And that’s A-OK.
I read this article recently about how all great fashion icons have one “signature” look (Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, Twiggy, etc). It’s true. Personally however, I have always preferred to wake up and put on something entirely different than the past day. It is a liberating expression of feeling that varies on the day-to-day. That has always been my favourite part of fashion; the ability to be able to wear whatever the hell you want, whenever you want!
Can you guide us through your daily routine and tell us what are some of those things that you can’t live without?
Every day is intentionally different. Routines scare me. On top of overseeing Identity Crisis, I usually have a handful of creative projects going on as well (styling, modelling, design). Even if I say to myself that I’m too busy, I’m always finding new photoshoots and small projects. It keeps my life interesting and most importantly, creatively stimulated!
Also, things that I can’t live without: An inspirational trip to the art museum, Japanese culture (especially the Studio Ghibli films), gourmet cheese, 80’s synth pop, finding cool sh#t / good reads on the internet, my googly-eyed Japanese Chin and my handsome boyfriend <3
